Greetings...I very recently upgraded to version 10.58 and while it seems to be working well for the most part, I am having some excessive stability issues. The majority of the crashing comes from either trying to bring a recently created symbol into a design. I have tried several file naming variations as well as symbol save locations and it appears that more often than not it crashes once I attempt to load the symbol in (only seems to be doing it to symbols that were created after upgrading to ver 10.58).
I also get quite a bit of crashing when using the scroll wheel to zoom in within the design, does not do it all the time just occasionally (4-5 times a day). None of my settings seem amiss. I am using XP SP3 and did install version 10.5 first then opened and closed Irricad program briefly before patching up to 10.58.
Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Crashing issues with 10.58
Hi Mike,
Regarding the symbol crash - does the symbol have an embedded image in it? This is known to cause a crash, and we are investigating.
We have also recently fixed a crashed related to the dynamic pan tool (wheel-press), but we have had other reports of scroll wheel problems. Do you know if this is related to a specific tool / operation?
Thanks,
Dan

Re: Crashing issues with 10.58
Hi Dan,
Thanks for the quick response. Of coarse now neither one of the errors can be replicated now,
so not sure what the issues were about but if I do see them resurface I will let you know. For reference though the newly created symbols did not have embedded images within them. Also The Scroll wheel issue seemed to occur occasionally when quickly zooming in.
However I do have an issue pop up recently that seems more pressing. Once in awhile when I save a file
or go to open a file Irricad hangs up for some time and eventually crashes. On one noted instance when I try to restart Irricad and attempt to open the file that it crashed on, it gives me the error "unexpected file format" and will not allow me to open the design.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Crashing issues with 10.58
Hi Mike,
"Hanging" may be caused by auto-save, if your design is large. Irricad may appear to freeze while the save is performed, and there is an outside possibility that trying to do 'things' while the autosave is in progress may cause a crash. The only thing to do is to wait until the save is finished (you can adjust the frequency of auto-saves, or turn them off).
For the broken file, it sounds like Irricad may have crash while part way through an auto-save, causing the file to become corrupt. We may be able to rescue the design, if you email it to us (support at irricad dot com), depending on the extent of the damage.
Regards

Re: Crashing issues with 10.58
Mike,
Additionally - I should have mentioned - if you ever have a crash with Irricad, you should first check your backup folder for a copy of the design (check Settings|Miscellaneous for your backup file location). Of course, you might still lose some information since the last time you saved, but it's better than a (potential) total loss.

Thanks Dan,
I sent the corrupt file to your team for evaluation. I typically turn the auto-save off due to the extra potential for crashing and hangups. Instead I use a programmable keyboard to macro tasks I need quick access to such as saving and just try to remember to hit the button quite often, I mention the keyboard as possibly that could be the cause the of the problem, though I have been using it with Irricad since version 7. Also just an fyi I did have another rather small and simple design become corrupt in the same way earlier today. I did a save as and saved the file with a new name (as I had revisions to do) and it instantly crashed and become corrupt. Not really an issue as I haven't made any changes and still have the original file, I just wanted to let you know that I think there might be something else causing the issue other than the auto-save. Both of the designs were originally designed with version 10.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Crashing issues with 10.58
Irricad Team,
Just wanted to mention I hope the recovery for AEI and everyone else within the region is recovering well regarding the Earthquakes.
Also that the majority of my crashing issues seem to have been eliminated. A large portion of them were caused by image files within a design not carrying over properly from version 10 to 10.5, I believe this is intentional due to a new and improved image handling process. Correct me if I am wrong...I'm no techie!
However at least on my computer setup it caused crashing and file corruption when I did have a pre-version 10.5 image present and attempted to save the file within version 10.5 (border is the only part of the image that is retained it appears, while the actual image itself was not visible as it converts to a 0,0 pixel size).
A simple fix for this is to open the design and prior to saving the file locate and delete the image border then save (maybe throw a repair in there first for good measure). Alternatively if you wish to retain the image, you can re-import it into the design while using old image file border as a scale guide, just remember to delete the old border when finished. I haven't had much problems since. Just wanted to pass this on if anyone else has experienced this issue.
Keep up the great work!

Re: Crashing issues with 10.58
Mike,
Thanks for the investigative work - it really helps gives us somewhere to start in looking into this issue. The change over to the new image system was supposed to be transparent and fault free, so it it will be interesting to see if we can get to the bottom of this.
Can I ask - did you install 10.5 over 10 (i.e., into the same directory)?
And do you have an image.dll file in your 10.5 install directory?
Cheers,
Dan

Re: Crashing issues with 10.58
Dan -
I did install 10.5 over version 10, though while on the subject I do somehow have two program folders that appeared when I upgraded to version 10 (still no version 10.5 folder shown). I am not sure if this was intentional nor not. All file paths currently still come from the version 9 folder i.e. symbols, database, backup, etc.
This is what it looks like when I open the AEI folder within windows explorer.
C:\Program Files\AEI Software\IRRICAD Pro 9
C:\Program Files\AEI Software\IRRICAD Pro 10
I ran a search for the "image.dll" file and none was found on my hard drive.
Thanks for your help and have a great weekend!

Re: Crashing issues with 10.58
Mike,
Do you recall if you installed the Upgrade for 10.5 or a new installation? Because 10.5 does install in the IRRICAD Pro 10 folder by default, if a full installation (or the V1050Minimal option off the website) is installed in to the existing IRRICAD Pro 10 folder, this may have unknown consequences.
If you did install the Upgrade option, then all old installations are removed, except for any files you have created i.e designs, symbols, templates etc. In this case, move all your files to the appropriate places in the IRRICAD Pro 10 folder and point all your paths to these folders.
Even if your old installations still exists, because of the newer symbols introduced after Version 9, it is best to point all paths for drawing symbols & database symbols to the current folder (IRRICAD Pro 10). This can be done in Settings|Drawing Items and in Settings|Irrigation Items.
It is a good sign that your computer cannot find an image.dll anywhere, as Version 10.5 does not use this program file anymore and it should have been removed when upgraded to Version 10.5. This shows us it is not a conflict issue if somehow the image.dll was still present.
Cheers,
Jo
