Importing TOPO points from AutoCadd

Hi yall,

Can one of you help me with the "official" procedure of how to import topo points from an Autocadd drawing? I've completed one successfully but i am not getting the same results with each drawing. First,i create a SaveAs of the original dwg (with the topo points) into a DXF format. Then,i will start with a blank Irricad drawing,go to Import&bring in the original dwg with the topo points.THEN,i select the Import Contours and select the DXF version of that same drawing. Sometimes this works,most often it doesnt. Problem being that the dwg formatted drawings have "flattened" out the z values So,i'm certain that i'm not doing the importing right. The only way that i've been able to achieve successful elevation data into my Irricad designs,is look at the symbols (all the information from the points is in a symbol format), create an individual spot height point over it, type in the height data, and move on from there. Putting in a few spot points is fine,but when we have alot of points,i really would rather not.Any help is much appreciated,thank you so much.

Hi Samantha,

If the elevation information is not expressed as a Z value in the DXF (not a 3-D polyline or point), or is in a format which IRRICAD does not recognise, the elevations will come in at zero or a negative number. You can check the required elevation layer(s) after importing the file (File|Import) and therefore ensure the layers selected as elevation layers during (File| Import Contours) are indeed the correct ones. Any layers imported as elevation layers that do not contain a Z value will be set to zero.

The official steps are:
1. Import the drawing (File|Import).
2. Find the layer name(s) of the contours or spot heights.
3. Import the elevation layer(s) File|Import Contours by highlighting them in the list (hold the Ctrl key to highlight more than one).
4. Look at the 3D DEM view to check the elevation data is correct.

In your description, do you mean that you place new spot heights over the existing zero elevation data? Are the symbols not elevations themselves?
If you wish, please send the DXF to your local support or to us to pinpoint the particular problem with the file.
