VIH Setup and Design Questions

Hello,

I am a recent owner of IrriCAD and have many questions on designing systems with VIH sprinklers. I deal mainly in Golf Irrigation Design and I feel that the manual does not cover Pressure Regulated VIH outputs very well and that it would be great if any new release of IrriCAD considers simplifying the software to facilitate using such outputs. Sorry for all these questions/comments but again, not a lot of information on the manual:

1- When creating a Pressure Regulated VIH outlet, I read that it would be best for the "Flow Tolerance % Below" to be set at 0. What about the % above? If the outlet is regulated from 70 to 150psi, should the % above be set at 210% so the system knows it can provide about 150psi to that outlet?

2- As golf courses are always composed of areas with varying shapes, it is best to manually place each outlet on the irrigated areas. When doing so, how does IrriCAD knows that the selected outlets are Pressure Regulated VIH when it is time to size the pipes and pump station?

3- When clicking on the "Zone Outlet" icon to add an outlet to a design, a pop-up shows up (see attached image) and we can see an area saying "VIH Name" but it is grayed out. I cannot find anything that relates to this in the manual. Is there any information on what this is and how to use it?

I have more questions but answers to the ones above may clear them. I am also available for a call or a video meeting if it is easier to address these that way.

Thanks!

Hi,

Thank you for your questions.
Firstly, for VIH outlets only use Mainline|Outlet. When placed, these outlets will be assigned a zone name.

1. The percentage above on pressure regulated outlets can be set to the required percentage (e.g. 210%) to enable use of the full pressure range. Note that if this equates to a higher than allowable pressure, if starting with a higher pressure, the pressure will be capped at the "Maximum Pressure". You can have a percentage below if you wish to allow for an operating pressure below the nominal pressure. This pressure 'window' is used when sizing pipe with LP Design.

2. Pressure regulated items are those that have an index or exponent of zero. For nozzles, the constant will equate to the flow in litres per hour and does not change when the pressure changes because of the zero index. (Non-PC emitters typically have an index between 0.4 and 0.6).

3. The dialog looks the same for zone outlets and mainline outlets, however you will not be able to access the VIH name in the Zone Outlet dialog.

I trust this helps answer your questions.

Thanks Jo. This is helpful.

I now realize I was using the wrong icon to add outlets. I did try using the "Mainline Outlet" button but the "VIH Name" is still greyed out. What is that name used for and is there a place in the software where we can define these names?

Once the mainline outlet is placed it will have a zone name, which is then editable in the mainline outlet change dialog.
The default names are set in Settings|Names "Zones". Or before placing the mainline outlet right-click and select Default Name to change the base name.
Note, do not overwrite the "~~~" as this is the automatic numbering. If you want to start the numbering from 1, for a different base zone name set, rest the "Number from" field in Settings|Names.

Hi,

After you place the emitters using the Mainline|Outlet function, you will be able to edit them and you will see the field "VIH Name" activated. (See figure below).

Regards.
